Thousands of organizations, including universities, government agencies, and companies, use MediaWiki for collaborative documentation.[1]

MediaWiki is the software that runs Wikipedia and a number of other wiki encyclopedias, such as Citizendium, Metapedia, Scholarpedia, and Conservapedia. MediaWiki is also used by a lot of companies on the inside, like Novell and Intel. The decentralized nature of the platform makes it easier and cheaper for organizations to share information across the organization than it would be with a centrally controlled knowledge repository.

Access control, file management, and integration with other technologies are often very important in enterprise wikis.
