Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval (EDGAR) is the electronic filing and disclosure system operated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the submission, processing, storage, and public dissemination of corporate filings required under United States federal securities laws. Introduced to modernize the securities disclosure process, EDGAR enables publicly traded companies, investment funds, institutional investors, and other regulated entities to file reports and registration statements electronically while providing investors, regulators, researchers, and the general public with timely access to financial and corporate information. The system serves as the principal repository for mandatory SEC filings and plays a central role in promoting transparency, investor protection, and efficient capital markets in the United States.

EDGAR is used by a broad range of filers, including public companies, foreign private issuers, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, broker-dealers, self-regulatory organizations, and institutional investment managers. The system accepts numerous filing types required under the Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the Investment Company Act of 1940, the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, the Trust Indenture Act of 1939, and other federal securities laws. Common filings available through EDGAR include annual reports on Form 10-K, quarterly reports on Form 10-Q, current reports on Form 8-K, registration statements such as Forms S-1 and F-1, proxy statements, tender offer documents, beneficial ownership reports on Schedules 13D and 13G, insider trading reports on Forms 3, 4, and 5, and institutional investment disclosures on Form 13F. The system also supports electronic submission of XBRL financial statements, enabling standardized machine-readable financial reporting.

The EDGAR system was developed during the 1980s and early 1990s as part of the SEC's efforts to replace paper-based filing with electronic disclosure. Following a phased implementation, electronic filing became mandatory for most registrants in the mid-1990s. Over time, EDGAR has incorporated additional capabilities including online filing, full-text search, interactive data reporting, structured financial disclosures, and application programming interfaces (APIs) for automated access to filing information. The adoption of Inline XBRL has further enhanced the accessibility and comparability of financial information by embedding structured data directly within corporate filings. EDGAR has consequently become an essential source of corporate, financial, and regulatory information for investors, financial analysts, researchers, journalists, and regulatory authorities worldwide.

EDGAR operates as a core component of the disclosure framework administered by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and supports the regulatory oversight of the [[New York Stock Exchange]], Nasdaq, broker-dealers, investment companies, and publicly listed corporations. It is widely integrated into financial information platforms, market intelligence services, academic research databases, compliance systems, and investment analysis tools. Through its electronic disclosure infrastructure, EDGAR has significantly improved the speed, accessibility, standardization, and transparency of corporate reporting in the United States, making it one of the world's most comprehensive public repositories of securities and financial disclosure information.

History
Development of EDGAR began during the 1980s as the SEC sought to modernize its disclosure system and reduce reliance on paper filings. Pilot programmes were introduced before the system entered broader operational use in the early 1990s. Electronic filing gradually became mandatory for most public companies, replacing manual submission of corporate reports and registration documents.

Subsequent enhancements introduced internet-based filing, full-text search capabilities, structured financial reporting through XBRL, Inline XBRL reporting, and public APIs for accessing filing data. These developments have substantially expanded the availability and usability of corporate disclosure information for both regulators and market participants.
