MSCI All Country World Index (MSCI ACWI) is a global stock market index that measures the performance of large-capitalization and mid-capitalization companies across both developed and emerging market economies. Developed and maintained by MSCI Inc., the index is one of the world's most comprehensive and widely used equity benchmarks, providing investors with broad exposure to global equity markets through a single index. It is extensively used by institutional investors, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), index funds, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and asset managers for portfolio benchmarking, passive investing, and international asset allocation.

The MSCI All Country World Index combines the constituents of the MSCI World Index and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, thereby representing companies listed in both developed and emerging economies. The index employs a free-float market capitalization-weighted methodology, under which constituent weights are determined according to the market value of shares available for public trading rather than total outstanding shares. This methodology provides a broad representation of the investable global equity market while reflecting changes in company size and market conditions.

The MSCI ACWI serves as one of the principal benchmarks for globally diversified equity portfolios. Its extensive geographic and sectoral coverage enables investors to obtain exposure to companies operating across multiple regions, industries, and stages of economic development. Because of its comprehensive scope, the index is frequently used as a reference benchmark for global equity funds and multi-asset investment strategies.

The composition of the MSCI All Country World Index evolves over time as countries are reclassified, companies are added or removed, and constituent weights change in response to market capitalization, liquidity, corporate actions, and periodic index reviews.

History
The increasing globalization of financial markets during the late twentieth century created demand for a single benchmark capable of measuring the performance of both developed and emerging equity markets.

MSCI had already established separate benchmarks for developed markets through the MSCI World Index and for developing economies through the MSCI Emerging Markets Index. To provide investors with a unified measure of global equity market performance, MSCI introduced the All Country World Index in 1990.

Since its introduction, the index has expanded alongside the growth of international capital markets, incorporating additional countries and companies as financial markets became more accessible and investable. Improvements in trading infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and foreign investment accessibility have contributed to the continued evolution of the benchmark.

Today, the MSCI All Country World Index is one of the most widely recognized global equity benchmarks and supports investment products managing substantial assets worldwide.

Objectives
The principal objectives of the MSCI All Country World Index are to:

* measure global equity market performance;
* provide a comprehensive international benchmark;
* facilitate passive investment strategies;
* support diversified portfolio construction;
* improve international market comparability;
* represent the global investable equity universe.

These objectives contribute to standardized measurement of worldwide equity performance.

Methodology
The MSCI All Country World Index employs a free-float market capitalization-weighted methodology.

Each constituent's weight is determined according to its free-float-adjusted market capitalization, excluding shares that are not readily available for public trading through the application of a free-float adjustment factor.

The adjusted market capitalization is calculated as:

<math>
\text{Adjusted Market Capitalization}
=
P \times Q \times F
</math>

where:

* <math>P</math> is the market price per share;
* <math>Q</math> is the total number of outstanding shares;
* <math>F</math> is the free-float adjustment factor.

The aggregate adjusted market capitalization of all constituent companies determines the index value and constituent weights.

Market coverage
The MSCI All Country World Index combines companies from both developed and emerging economies.

Its market coverage includes:

* developed markets;
* emerging markets;
* large-cap companies;
* mid-cap companies.

The index is designed to represent a substantial proportion of the global investable equity opportunity set while excluding frontier markets, which are measured separately by the MSCI Frontier Markets Index.

Constituent selection
Companies are selected using objective eligibility criteria established by MSCI.

Selection factors include:

* free-float market capitalization;
* liquidity;
* trading frequency;
* foreign ownership accessibility;
* investability;
* exchange listing.

Constituent eligibility is reviewed periodically to maintain representative market coverage.

Geographic representation
The MSCI All Country World Index provides broad international diversification through representation from numerous countries across multiple regions.

Representative regions include:

* North America;
* Europe;
* Asia-Pacific;
* Latin America;

Index maintenance
MSCI periodically reviews the index to ensure that it accurately represents the global investable equity market.

Maintenance activities include:

* constituent additions;
* constituent deletions;
* free-float adjustments;
* corporate action adjustments;
* country classification reviews;
* scheduled rebalancing.

These reviews maintain the consistency and investability of the benchmark.

Applications
The MSCI All Country World Index is widely used throughout the investment industry.

Its principal applications include:

* portfolio benchmarking;
* exchange-traded funds;
* index funds;
* institutional investment;
* asset allocation;
* performance measurement;
* financial research;
* derivatives trading.

Many globally diversified investment funds use the MSCI ACWI as their primary performance benchmark.

Advantages
The MSCI All Country World Index offers several important advantages.

It provides comprehensive exposure to global equity markets through a single benchmark while employing a transparent and internationally recognized methodology. Broad geographic and sectoral diversification reduces dependence on individual countries or industries, and the use of free-float weighting improves investability.

The index also simplifies international portfolio construction by combining developed and emerging markets within a unified framework.

Limitations
Despite its broad coverage, the MSCI All Country World Index has several limitations.

Because it employs market capitalization weighting, larger companies and markets receive proportionally greater influence over overall index performance. The index also excludes frontier markets, resulting in less comprehensive coverage of smaller developing economies.

Furthermore, country and sector concentrations may arise naturally as market capitalizations change over time.
