The National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) is India's largest stock exchange and one of the world's leading securities exchanges by trading volume and derivatives activity. Incorporated in 1992 and commencing operations in 1994, the NSE was established on the recommendation of the Pherwani Committee to introduce a modern, transparent, and fully electronic securities trading system in India. Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the exchange pioneered nationwide screen-based electronic trading in the Indian securities market, replacing the traditional open outcry system. The NSE is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and is a member of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), playing a central role in the development and modernization of India's capital markets.

The National Stock Exchange provides trading facilities for a broad range of financial instruments, including equity shares, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), mutual fund units, debt securities, government securities, currency derivatives, commodity derivatives, interest rate derivatives, equity derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing. The exchange operates advanced electronic trading platforms that facilitate high-speed, nationwide access for retail and institutional investors. Through its subsidiaries and associated entities, the NSE also provides clearing, settlement, depository, index administration, market data dissemination, technology services, and investor education programmes. Its principal clearing institution, the National Securities Clearing Corporation Limited (NSCCL), ensures efficient clearing and settlement while managing counterparty risk.

The NSE is best known for its benchmark indices, particularly the NIFTY 50, which tracks the performance of 50 large and liquid companies listed on the exchange and serves as one of India's principal stock market indicators. Other widely followed indices include the NIFTY Next 50, NIFTY 100, NIFTY Midcap, NIFTY Smallcap, and numerous sectoral, thematic, strategy, and fixed-income indices administered by NSE Indices Limited. These indices form the basis for index funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), futures, options, and other investment products widely used by domestic and international investors. The NSE also operates the NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) within Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), providing international trading and financial market services through India's International Financial Services Centre.

The National Stock Exchange works closely with institutions including the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), the BSE Limited (BSE), the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), and the Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL). Internationally, the exchange collaborates with organizations such as the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), and other global market infrastructure providers. Through technological innovation, transparent market operations, risk management, and financial market development, the NSE has become one of the world's leading securities exchanges and a cornerstone of India's financial system.
