'''[[Pension plan]]''' is a retirement arrangement established to provide income or other benefits to individuals after retirement. A pension plan generally specifies how contributions are made, how assets are managed, how benefits are calculated or accumulated, and how retirement benefits are distributed.

Pension plans may be sponsored by employers, governments, financial institutions, or other organizations. They may be structured as [[Defined benefit pension plan|defined benefit]] or [[Defined contribution pension plan|defined contribution]] arrangements, although other hybrid and specialized structures also exist.

==Purpose==

The principal purposes of a pension plan are to:

* provide income during retirement;
* facilitate long-term retirement saving;
* accumulate and invest retirement assets;
* establish rules for contributions and benefits;
* manage retirement-related financial risks.

==Types==

The two principal categories of pension plans are:

* [[Defined benefit pension plan|defined benefit plans]];
* [[Defined contribution pension plan|defined contribution plans]].

===Defined benefit pension plans===

A '''defined benefit pension plan''' specifies retirement benefits according to a predetermined formula.

Benefits may depend on factors such as:

* salary;
* years of service;
* age at retirement;
* an accrual rate;
* other plan-specific conditions.

The plan sponsor generally bears significant responsibility for ensuring that sufficient resources are available to meet the promised benefits.

===Defined contribution pension plans===

A '''defined contribution pension plan''' specifies contributions rather than a predetermined retirement benefit.

The eventual retirement value generally depends on:

* contributions;
* employer contributions;
* investment performance;
* fees and expenses;
* withdrawals;
* the timing of retirement.

Investment risk is generally borne primarily by the participant, although the allocation of risks varies according to the plan design and applicable legal framework.

==Contributions==

Pension plans may receive contributions from:

* employees;
* employers;
* governments;
* other participating organizations.

Contribution arrangements may specify fixed amounts, percentages of salary, matching contributions, or other formulas.

The applicable contribution requirements depend on the type of plan, sponsor, jurisdiction, and governing rules.

==Pension fund==

A [[Pension fund]] is a pool of assets established or maintained to finance pension benefits.

Pension-plan contributions may be invested in financial and real assets, including:

* equities;
* bonds;
* government securities;
* real estate;
* infrastructure;
* cash and cash equivalents;
* other permitted investments.

The investment structure depends on the type of pension plan and its governing framework.

==Investment management==

Pension assets may be managed by:

* the plan sponsor;
* trustees;
* internal investment teams;
* external investment managers;
* insurance companies;
* other authorized financial institutions.

Investment management generally considers expected returns, risk, liquidity, investment horizon, and future benefit obligations.

==Asset allocation==

[[Asset allocation]] determines how pension assets are distributed among different [[Asset class|asset classes]].

A pension plan may diversify its investments across:

* equities;
* fixed-income securities;
* real assets;
* alternative investments;
* cash and short-term instruments.

The appropriate allocation depends on the plan's objectives, liabilities, funding position, risk tolerance, and investment horizon.

==Asset-liability management==

[[Asset-liability management]] is particularly important for pension plans because investment assets must support future benefit obligations.

ALM may consider:

* expected benefit payments;
* investment cash flows;
* interest rates;
* inflation;
* longevity;
* liquidity;
* funding requirements.

Defined benefit plans generally require more explicit management of the relationship between assets and pension liabilities.

==Funding==

The funding requirements of a pension plan depend on its structure.

For a defined benefit plan, funding is generally assessed by comparing the value of plan assets with the estimated present value of future pension obligations.

A simplified funding ratio is:

<math>
\text{Funding Ratio}
=
\frac{\text{Pension Plan Assets}}
{\text{Present Value of Pension Obligations}}
\times100\%
</math>

Defined contribution plans generally do not have the same type of guaranteed future benefit obligation because the retirement benefit depends on the accumulated account value.

==Vesting==

'''Vesting''' determines when a participant obtains a non-forfeitable right to certain pension benefits or employer contributions.

Vesting rules may differ between employee and employer contributions and can depend on length of service or other conditions.

==Portability==

'''Portability''' refers to the ability to preserve or transfer pension benefits when an individual changes employment or otherwise leaves a pension arrangement.

Depending on the applicable rules, participants may be able to:

* retain accumulated benefits;
* transfer assets to another qualifying retirement arrangement;
* transfer benefits between plans;
* receive permitted distributions.

The available options vary by jurisdiction and plan design.

==Retirement benefits==

Pension benefits may be provided through:

* periodic pension payments;
* annuity payments;
* lump-sum distributions;
* withdrawals from accumulated retirement assets;
* combinations of these methods.

The form and timing of benefits depend on the plan's rules and applicable law.

==Risk management==

Pension plans may be exposed to several types of risk, including:

* investment risk;
* interest-rate risk;
* inflation risk;
* longevity risk;
* liquidity risk;
* funding risk;
* operational risk.

Risk management is particularly important for defined benefit plans because the sponsor may be responsible for financing promised benefits regardless of investment performance.

==Governance==

Pension plans may be governed by:

* trustees;
* boards;
* plan sponsors;
* government authorities;
* pension administrators;
* regulators.

Governance responsibilities may include:

* investment oversight;
* risk management;
* benefit administration;
* financial reporting;
* compliance;
* fiduciary oversight.

==Regulation==

Pension plans are generally subject to legal and regulatory requirements concerning matters such as:

* contributions;
* investment activities;
* benefit protection;
* governance;
* reporting;
* disclosure;
* taxation.

The regulatory framework varies substantially among jurisdictions.

==Tax treatment==

Many pension systems provide tax incentives intended to encourage retirement saving.

Depending on the jurisdiction and plan structure, tax treatment may apply to:

* employee contributions;
* employer contributions;
* investment income;
* capital gains;
* retirement distributions.

Specific tax treatment depends on applicable law.

The precise allocation of risks depends on the structure and legal framework of the pension arrangement.

==Importance==

Pension plans are important components of retirement systems because they provide structured mechanisms for accumulating, investing, and distributing resources over long periods. Their design determines how contributions, investment returns, financial risks, and retirement benefits are allocated among participants, employers, governments, and other parties.
