Primary peg is a type of Pegged order whose price is automatically linked to the best quotation on the same side of the market. A primary peg buy order continuously tracks the highest current bid price, while a primary peg sell order continuously tracks the lowest current ask price. As market quotations change, the trading system automatically adjusts the order's price to remain aligned with the prevailing best quotation, subject to any price limits or exchange rules.

Primary peg orders are widely used in modern electronic securities markets because they allow investors to maintain competitive quotations without manually modifying their orders. They are commonly supported by stock exchanges, alternative trading systems (ATSs), and electronic trading platforms, and are frequently employed by market makers, institutional investors, broker-dealers, and algorithmic trading systems.

Unlike a Limit order, which remains fixed at a specified price until modified or cancelled, a primary peg order adjusts automatically as the best bid or best ask changes. This dynamic pricing enables investors to remain competitive within the order book while reducing operational complexity and improving execution opportunities.

Primary peg orders are an important component of modern market microstructure because they support market liquidity, facilitate price discovery, and contribute to the efficient operation of electronic financial markets.

History
Primary peg orders emerged with the development of electronic trading systems during the late twentieth century. As markets became increasingly automated, exchanges introduced dynamic order types capable of adjusting automatically to changing market conditions.

The widespread adoption of computerized order books and algorithmic execution further increased the use of primary peg orders by institutional investors and market makers seeking to maintain competitive quotations without constant manual intervention.

Today, primary peg functionality is available on many electronic trading platforms worldwide.

Objectives
The principal objectives of primary peg orders are to:

* maintain competitive quotations;
* improve execution efficiency;
* reduce manual order modification;
* support market liquidity;
* facilitate price discovery;
* enhance automated trading.

These objectives contribute to efficient electronic markets.

Operation
A primary peg order continuously references the best quotation on the same side of the market.

* A buy order follows the best bid.
* A sell order follows the best ask.

Whenever the reference quotation changes, the trading system automatically updates the order price.

Example
Suppose the current market quotations are:
Best bid (US$)
Best ask (US$)
49.90
50.10
An investor submits a primary peg buy order.

Initially, the order is priced at US$49.90, matching the best bid.

If another participant raises the best bid to US$49.95, the primary peg order automatically adjusts to US$49.95.

Similarly, if an investor submits a primary peg sell order, it initially follows the best ask. If the best ask falls from US$50.10 to US$50.05, the sell order automatically adjusts to US$50.05.

Characteristics
Primary peg orders generally possess several characteristics.

These include:

* automatic price adjustment;
* same-side quotation tracking;
* continuous market responsiveness;
* electronic execution;
* compatibility with automated trading systems.

Their implementation varies among trading venues.

Relationship with pegged orders
A primary peg is a specialized type of Pegged order.

Whereas pegged orders may reference various benchmarks, such as the midpoint or last traded price, a primary peg always follows the best quotation on the same side of the market.

Relationship with market peg orders
Primary peg orders differ from market peg orders.
Order type
Reference price
Primary peg buy
Best bid
Primary peg sell
Best ask
Market peg buy
Best ask
Market peg sell
Best bid
Primary peg orders seek to maintain competitive quotations without crossing the spread, whereas market peg orders generally prioritize faster execution.

Relationship with order books
Primary peg orders participate directly in the electronic order book.

As the best bid or ask changes, the trading system automatically updates the order while applying the priority rules established by the exchange.

Relationship with market liquidity
Primary peg orders contribute to market liquidity by maintaining competitive buy and sell quotations.

Because they automatically adjust to changing market conditions, they help keep liquidity available near prevailing market prices.

Relationship with price discovery
Primary peg orders support price discovery by continuously reflecting changes in market demand and supply.

Their dynamic pricing enables the order book to adapt efficiently as quotations evolve.

Relationship with algorithmic trading
Primary peg orders are frequently employed in algorithmic trading.

Trading algorithms use them to:

* maintain competitive quotes;
* reduce manual intervention;
* improve execution quality;
* support market-making strategies.

Relationship with market microstructure
Primary peg orders are an important subject within market microstructure.

Researchers study:

* quotation dynamics;
* execution quality;
* liquidity provision;
* order priority;
* transaction costs;
* automated trading behavior.

These analyses improve understanding of modern electronic markets.

Applications
Primary peg orders are widely used in:

* market making;
* institutional portfolio management;
* algorithmic trading;
* electronic trading;
* quantitative investment strategies;
* broker-dealer execution systems.

They are particularly useful when investors wish to remain competitive without crossing the bid-ask spread.

Advantages
Primary peg orders provide several important benefits.

They automatically maintain competitive pricing, reduce manual order management, improve execution opportunities, support market liquidity, and increase operational efficiency in electronic trading environments.

Limitations
Despite their advantages, primary peg orders have certain limitations.

Rapid market movements may cause frequent price adjustments, and execution depends upon the availability of counterparties. Exchange rules governing order priority and automatic repricing may also differ among trading venues.

Furthermore, investors may use limit prices to prevent automatic adjustments beyond acceptable price levels.

Importance
Primary peg orders are an important feature of modern electronic trading systems because they enable investors to maintain continuously competitive quotations while reducing manual intervention. Their widespread use enhances market liquidity, supports efficient price discovery, and reflects the increasing automation of global financial markets.
