'''[[S&P 500 Equal Weight Index]]''' ('''S&P 500 EWI''') is an equal-weighted [[stock market index]] that measures the performance of the same 500 constituent companies included in the [[S&P 500]], while assigning each constituent an equal weight at every scheduled rebalancing. Unlike the traditional S&P 500, which uses a [[free-float market capitalization]]-weighted methodology, the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index allocates approximately the same weight to every constituent company, regardless of its market capitalization. The index is maintained by [[S&P Dow Jones Indices]] and is widely used as a benchmark for diversified equity investment strategies.

The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index provides an alternative representation of the United States equity market by reducing the dominance of the largest companies. Because every constituent contributes approximately equally to index performance following each rebalance, the index generally offers greater exposure to medium-sized companies within the S&P 500 universe and reduces concentration among the largest technology and financial companies.

The index has become increasingly important with the growth of passive investing and smart beta investment strategies. It serves as the underlying benchmark for numerous [[Exchange-traded fund|exchange-traded funds]] (ETFs), index funds, and institutional investment products designed to provide broader diversification than conventional market capitalization-weighted indices.

Although the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index contains the same constituent companies as the traditional S&P 500, differences in weighting methodology may result in significantly different investment characteristics, sector exposures, volatility, and long-term performance.

== History ==
The traditional [[S&P 500]] has long served as one of the principal benchmarks for the United States equity market. Because the index is weighted by free-float market capitalization, larger companies naturally receive greater influence over overall index performance.

As passive investing expanded during the late twentieth century, investors increasingly sought alternative weighting methodologies that reduced concentration among the largest companies while maintaining broad market exposure. Equal weighting emerged as one such methodology because it assigns identical initial weights to all constituent companies.

The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index was introduced in January 2003 by [[S&P Dow Jones Indices]] to provide an alternative benchmark emphasizing diversification rather than company size. Since its introduction, it has become one of the world's most widely followed equal-weight equity indices and serves as the basis for several investment funds and ETFs.

== Objectives ==
The principal objectives of the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index are to:

* measure the performance of the S&P 500 using equal weighting;
* reduce concentration among the largest companies;
* improve portfolio diversification;
* provide an alternative investment benchmark;
* support passive investment strategies;
* broaden market representation.

These objectives distinguish the index from traditional market capitalization-weighted benchmarks.

== Methodology ==
The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index includes the same constituent companies as the [[S&P 500]].

Instead of assigning weights according to [[free-float market capitalization]], however, each constituent receives approximately the same weight following each scheduled rebalance.

For an index containing ''N'' constituents, the target weight of each company is:

<math>
\frac{1}{N}
</math>

With 500 constituent companies, the theoretical weight immediately after rebalancing is:

<math>
\frac{1}{500}=0.002
</math>

or approximately '''0.20%''' per constituent.

Between scheduled rebalancing dates, constituent weights gradually change as share prices fluctuate.

== Rebalancing ==
The index undergoes periodic rebalancing to restore approximately equal constituent weights.

Rebalancing generally involves:

* reducing the weights of companies whose share prices have appreciated significantly;
* increasing the weights of companies whose relative weights have declined;
* incorporating constituent changes resulting from revisions to the [[S&P 500]];
* maintaining equal weighting across the portfolio.

This systematic process distinguishes equal-weight indices from traditional market capitalization-weighted benchmarks, which generally require fewer weight adjustments.

== Constituent selection ==
The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index contains the same companies as the [[S&P 500]].

Accordingly, constituent eligibility is determined using the S&P 500 selection methodology, which considers factors including:

* United States domicile;
* market capitalization;
* liquidity;
* public float;
* financial viability;
* exchange listing.

No additional constituent selection criteria are applied specifically for the equal-weight index.

== Characteristics ==
Compared with the traditional S&P 500, the equal-weight methodology produces several distinctive characteristics.

These include:

* lower concentration among the largest companies;
* greater exposure to medium-sized companies;
* broader sector representation;
* higher portfolio turnover due to rebalancing;
* reduced dominance of mega-cap stocks.

These characteristics may result in performance patterns that differ from those of capitalization-weighted indices.

== Applications ==
The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index is widely used in:

* exchange-traded funds;
* index funds;
* portfolio benchmarking;
* institutional investment;
* asset allocation;
* financial research;
* performance comparison.

It is particularly popular among investors seeking broader diversification while maintaining exposure to the companies included in the S&P 500.

== Advantages ==
The equal-weight methodology provides several advantages.

By assigning similar weights to every constituent, the index reduces concentration among the largest companies and provides broader participation in market performance. It also increases exposure to smaller companies within the large-cap universe and may benefit from periodic rebalancing that systematically reduces positions in outperforming stocks while increasing positions in underperforming stocks.

These characteristics make the index attractive to investors seeking diversification beyond traditional capitalization-weighted benchmarks.

== Limitations ==
Despite its advantages, the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index has several limitations.

Frequent rebalancing increases portfolio turnover and may result in higher transaction costs compared with market capitalization-weighted indices. Equal weighting also results in greater exposure to smaller companies within the index, which may increase volatility during certain market conditions.

Furthermore, because the methodology departs from market capitalization weighting, the index may underperform capitalization-weighted benchmarks during periods when the largest companies substantially outperform the broader market.

== Importance ==
The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index has become one of the most important alternative equity benchmarks in the United States. It demonstrates how changes in weighting methodology can significantly influence index composition, sector exposure, diversification, and investment performance while maintaining the same constituent universe. The index has also contributed to the broader development of smart beta and rules-based investment strategies.
