Zero-balance account (ZBA) is a bank account used in cash management in which the account maintains a target balance of zero by automatically transferring funds to or from a designated master account. A zero-balance account is typically used by businesses, government agencies, and other organizations to centralize cash management while maintaining separate accounts for different departments, business units, payroll, accounts payable, or other operational functions. At the end of each business day, any deficit in the zero-balance account is funded from the master account, while any surplus is automatically swept back into the master account. Zero-balance accounts are widely used in treasury management, working capital management, and cash budget planning to improve liquidity management and reduce idle cash balances.

History
Zero-balance accounts emerged during the latter half of the twentieth century as commercial banks developed increasingly sophisticated electronic cash management services for corporate customers. Large organizations managing multiple bank accounts sought methods to centralize liquidity while preserving operational separation among departments and subsidiaries.

Advances in electronic funds transfer systems and automated banking technology enabled banks to implement daily balance-sweeping arrangements, making zero-balance accounts a common feature of modern treasury management.

Today, zero-balance account services are offered by many commercial banks as part of integrated corporate cash management solutions.

Overview
A zero-balance account functions as a subsidiary account linked to a central master account.

During normal business operations:

* payments are made from the zero-balance account;
* deposits may be credited to the account;
* the account balance fluctuates throughout the day.

At the end of the banking day, the bank automatically transfers funds between the master account and the zero-balance account so that the subsidiary account returns to a balance of zero or another predetermined target balance.

Operation
The operation of a zero-balance account generally involves the following steps:

# operational transactions occur in the subsidiary account;
# the closing balance is calculated at the end of the business day;
# any deficit is funded from the master account;
# any surplus is transferred back to the master account;
# the subsidiary account begins the next business day with a zero balance.

This automated process minimizes idle cash while ensuring sufficient funds are available for operational transactions.

Applications
Zero-balance accounts are widely used in:

* payroll administration;
* accounts payable;
* accounts receivable;
* branch office operations;
* government agencies;
* retail businesses;
* manufacturing companies;
* multinational corporations.

Organizations often maintain separate zero-balance accounts for different operational functions while centralizing overall liquidity in a single master account.

Advantages
Zero-balance accounts provide several benefits.

These include:

* centralized cash management;
* improved liquidity control;
* reduced idle cash balances;
* simplified account reconciliation;
* enhanced cash forecasting;
* better working capital management;
* improved treasury efficiency;
* reduced short-term borrowing requirements.

Because excess funds are automatically concentrated in the master account, organizations can more effectively manage available cash resources.

Limitations
Despite their advantages, zero-balance accounts have several limitations.

These include:

* dependence on automated banking systems;
* potential banking service fees;
* operational complexity during implementation;
* reliance on timely electronic transfers;
* reduced flexibility if banking systems experience disruptions.

Organizations using zero-balance accounts generally require effective treasury controls and banking arrangements.

Relationship with cash management
Zero-balance accounts form part of broader cash management systems.

They are commonly used together with:

* cash concentration;
* cash pooling;
* electronic funds transfer;
* liquidity forecasting;
* cash budget preparation;
* working capital management;
* treasury management systems.

These techniques collectively improve the efficiency of corporate cash administration.

Impact
Zero-balance accounts have become an important component of modern corporate treasury management by enabling organizations to centralize liquidity while maintaining operationally separate bank accounts. Their use improves cash forecasting, reduces idle cash balances, enhances working capital efficiency, and supports effective financial planning. As electronic banking and treasury technologies have advanced, zero-balance accounts have become widely adopted by corporations, financial institutions, and public-sector organizations seeking to optimize cash management.
