Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Government Accountability Office conducts financial audits, performance audits, policy evaluations, legal opinions, bid protest decisions, and investigations across virtually all areas of federal government activity. Its work covers subjects including defense, healthcare, public finance, taxation, transportation, energy, cybersecurity, homeland security, international affairs, environmental policy, and information technology.

The Government Accountability Office serves as the principal audit institution of the United States Congress and plays a central role in congressional oversight, public financial management, and government accountability.
