Central Depository Services Limited
Central Depository Services (India) Limited (CDSL) is an Indian securities depository that provides electronic depository, settlement, and repository services for securities traded in the Indian capital markets. Established in 1999, CDSL facilitates the holding and transfer of securities in dematerialized (electronic) form, thereby eliminating the need for physical share certificates. Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the company is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) under the Depositories Act, 1996. CDSL is one of India's two central securities depositories, alongside the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), and forms a key component of the country's financial market infrastructure.
CDSL provides depository services for equity shares, corporate bonds, government securities, mutual fund units, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), commercial paper, certificates of deposit, treasury bills, sovereign gold bonds, alternative investment funds (AIFs), real estate investment trusts (REITs), infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs), and other eligible securities. Investors access these services through registered Depository Participants (DPs), including banks, brokerage firms, financial institutions, and other SEBI-registered intermediaries. By maintaining securities in electronic form, CDSL enables faster settlement, improves market efficiency, reduces operational risks, and eliminates the risks associated with physical share certificates, such as loss, theft, forgery, and damage.
History
The Depositories Act, 1996 established the legal framework for electronic securities depositories in India, facilitating the transition from paper-based securities to dematerialized holdings. Central Depository Services (India) Limited was incorporated in 1999 with the support of the BSE Limited (formerly the Bombay Stock Exchange) and several leading financial institutions and banks. The depository commenced operations in February 1999 and expanded rapidly alongside the growth of India's capital markets.
Over the years, CDSL introduced electronic settlement services, online account management, electronic voting, pledge and hypothecation facilities, electronic know-your-customer (e-KYC) solutions, document repositories, and digital transaction services. In 2017, the company became publicly listed on the BSE Limited, becoming one of the few publicly traded securities depositories in the world.
