National Securities Depository Limited
National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) is an Indian securities depository that provides electronic depository, settlement, and repository services for securities traded in the Indian capital markets. Established in 1996, NSDL was India's first securities depository and pioneered the dematerialization of securities, facilitating the transition from physical share certificates to electronic ownership records. Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the company operates under the regulatory supervision of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in accordance with the Depositories Act, 1996. Together with Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL), NSDL forms the backbone of India's securities depository infrastructure.
NSDL provides depository services for equity shares, corporate bonds, government securities, mutual fund units, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), commercial paper, certificates of deposit, treasury bills, sovereign gold bonds, alternative investment funds (AIFs), infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs), real estate investment trusts (REITs), and other eligible securities. Investors access these services through registered Depository Participants (DPs), including banks, brokerage firms, custodians, and financial institutions. By maintaining securities in electronic form, NSDL reduces settlement risk, eliminates the need for physical certificates, accelerates settlement cycles, and improves the safety, transparency, and efficiency of securities transactions.
History
The establishment of NSDL followed the enactment of the Depositories Act, 1996, which introduced a legal framework for holding and transferring securities electronically in India. National Securities Depository Limited was incorporated in August 1996 with the support of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), leading financial institutions, and major commercial banks. The depository commenced operations later that year and became the first institution to introduce large-scale dematerialization of securities in the Indian capital market.
NSDL played a pioneering role in replacing the paper-based settlement system with electronic depository services, significantly reducing settlement delays, forgery, bad deliveries, and transaction costs. The depository has continued to expand its technological capabilities by introducing digital account services, electronic pledging, online settlement infrastructure, e-KYC services, and secure digital repositories.
