The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is a permanent intergovernmental body of the United Nations that promotes inclusive and sustainable development through trade, investment, finance, technology, and economic cooperation. Established in 1964 by the United Nations General Assembly, UNCTAD was created to address the trade and development concerns of developing countries and to support their integration into the global economy. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the organization serves as the principal United Nations body responsible for matters relating to trade, investment, development finance, digital economy, competition policy, and sustainable economic growth.

UNCTAD's core functions are organized around three complementary pillars: research and policy analysis, intergovernmental consensus-building, and technical cooperation. The organization conducts economic research, develops policy recommendations, and provides technical assistance to member states on issues including international trade, investment promotion, debt management, commodities, competition law, consumer protection, maritime transport, logistics, e-commerce, digital transformation, science and technology, and sustainable development. Through its analytical work and capacity-building programmes, UNCTAD assists developing and least developed countries in strengthening institutions, improving trade competitiveness, attracting foreign direct investment, and participating more effectively in the international trading system.

The organization publishes several influential reports and statistical resources, including the Trade and Development Report, the World Investment Report, the Digital Economy Report, the Technology and Innovation Report, the Review of Maritime Transport, and the UNCTAD Handbook of Statistics. These publications are widely used by governments, international organizations, academic researchers, businesses, and policymakers to analyze global economic trends, investment flows, trade performance, technological change, and development challenges. UNCTAD also develops internationally recognized tools and programmes supporting investment policy, competition regulation, entrepreneurship, debt sustainability, customs modernization, and digital trade.

UNCTAD works closely with organizations including the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the International Trade Centre (ITC). Through policy dialogue, research, technical assistance, and international cooperation, UNCTAD plays a central role in advancing equitable globalization, sustainable development, and the integration of developing economies into the global trading and financial system while supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
