Gujarat International Finance Tec-City
The Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) is India's first operational international financial services centre (IFSC) and a planned smart city developed to serve as a global financial and technology hub. Located on the banks of the Sabarmati River between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in the state of Gujarat, the project was conceived by the Government of Gujarat to establish an internationally competitive financial centre comparable to leading global hubs such as Singapore, Dubai, London, and Hong Kong. Development of GIFT City commenced in 2007 through a joint venture between the Government of Gujarat and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS), with operations beginning in the following decade. The city combines advanced urban infrastructure with a dedicated regulatory and tax framework designed to attract global financial institutions and multinational enterprises.
GIFT City functions as India's designated International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), providing a jurisdiction for conducting cross-border financial transactions in foreign currencies. It hosts a wide range of financial institutions and market infrastructure, including international banking units, stock exchanges, clearing corporations, insurance and reinsurance companies, aircraft and ship leasing firms, fintech enterprises, alternative investment funds (AIFs), family investment funds, and global capability centres. The city is home to the India International Exchange (India INX), the NSE International Exchange (NSE IX), the India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX), and several international banking and financial service providers. Financial activities within GIFT City are regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), India's unified regulator for international financial services.
In addition to financial services, GIFT City has been developed as an integrated smart city featuring commercial office districts, residential neighbourhoods, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, hospitality infrastructure, and advanced digital utilities. The city incorporates district cooling systems, automated waste collection, underground utility tunnels, intelligent transport systems, high-speed telecommunications, and sustainable urban planning to support efficient business operations and high-quality urban living. Through regulatory reforms, tax incentives, liberalized capital market regulations, and international arbitration mechanisms, GIFT City seeks to attract foreign direct investment, encourage innovation in financial technology, and position India as a competitive participant in global financial markets.
GIFT City works closely with institutions including the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Ministry of Finance, and international organizations involved in financial regulation and market development. By integrating banking, capital markets, insurance, fintech, bullion trading, aircraft leasing, and global business services within a unified regulatory framework, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City has emerged as India's flagship international financial centre and a strategic component of the country's efforts to strengthen its role in global finance, international investment, and cross-border financial services.
