Borsa Italiana
The Borsa Italiana S.p.A. (Borsa Italiana) is the principal stock exchange of Italy and one of Europe's leading financial market operators. Headquartered in Milan, the exchange traces its origins to 1808 with the establishment of the Milan Stock Exchange during the Napoleonic era. Borsa Italiana operates regulated markets for equities, fixed-income securities, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), derivatives, investment funds, structured products, and other financial instruments. Since 2021, it has been a subsidiary of the Euronext group following its acquisition from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG). The exchange is regulated by the Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB) and the Bank of Italy.
Borsa Italiana operates several regulated markets and trading platforms serving domestic and international investors. These include the Euronext Milan equity market (formerly Mercato Telematico Azionario or MTA), Euronext STAR Milan for small and medium-sized enterprises meeting enhanced governance standards, the MOT bond market, ETFplus for exchange-traded funds and exchange-traded products, SeDeX for securitized derivatives, and the IDEM derivatives market. Through these platforms, the exchange facilitates the trading of shares, government and corporate bonds, exchange-traded products, futures, options, warrants, certificates, and other listed financial instruments while supporting capital formation and efficient price discovery.
Throughout its history, Borsa Italiana has played a significant role in the modernization of Italy's financial markets through the introduction of electronic trading systems, advanced market surveillance, centralized clearing and settlement infrastructure, and enhanced corporate governance standards. The exchange supports issuers through listing services, market data, investor relations programmes, sustainable finance initiatives, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) products. Following its integration into the Euronext group, Borsa Italiana became part of one of Europe's largest pan-European exchange networks, enabling greater market connectivity and cross-border investment opportunities.
Borsa Italiana works closely with institutions including Euronext, the Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa (CONSOB), the Bank of Italy, Euronext Securities Milan (formerly Monte Titoli), Cassa di Compensazione e Garanzia (CC&G), the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), and the European Central Bank (ECB). Internationally, it is a member of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) and collaborates with exchanges, clearing organizations, and financial market infrastructure providers worldwide. Through market operation, technological innovation, and regulatory cooperation, Borsa Italiana serves as the principal securities exchange of Italy and an important component of the European capital markets.
