United Nations Development Programme
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the global development agency of the United Nations responsible for supporting sustainable development, poverty reduction, democratic governance, resilience, and capacity-building in developing countries. Established on 22 November 1965 through the merger of the Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance (EPTA) and the United Nations Special Fund, the UNDP became operational in 1966 as the principal development assistance organization of the United Nations system. Headquartered in [[New York City]], the Programme works in partnership with governments, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector to advance sustainable human development and implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The United Nations Development Programme provides technical assistance, policy advice, financial support, institutional capacity-building, and development expertise across a broad range of sectors. Its principal areas of work include poverty eradication, democratic governance, peacebuilding, climate action, biodiversity conservation, disaster risk reduction, energy transition, digital transformation, gender equality, public administration, rule of law, and inclusive economic growth. The organization also administers development projects, supports electoral processes, strengthens public institutions, and assists countries in designing and implementing national development strategies aligned with international development commitments.
In addition to development assistance, the UNDP produces research, data, and policy analysis relating to global development challenges. It publishes the annual Human Development Report, which introduced the Human Development Index (HDI), one of the world's most widely used measures of human development. The Programme also develops analytical tools, governance indicators, climate adaptation frameworks, and digital public infrastructure initiatives while supporting countries in responding to humanitarian crises, pandemics, conflicts, environmental degradation, and socioeconomic inequality. Through innovation laboratories, financing initiatives, and partnerships, the UNDP promotes evidence-based policymaking and sustainable development solutions worldwide.
The United Nations Development Programme works closely with institutions including the United Nations, the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). It also collaborates with governments, regional organizations, multilateral development banks, academic institutions, and civil society organizations across more than 170 countries and territories. Through technical cooperation, policy innovation, and international partnerships, the UNDP serves as one of the leading institutions supporting sustainable development and human development worldwide.
