Korea Exchange
The Korea Exchange (KRX) is the sole securities exchange operator in South Korea. Headquartered in Busan, with major offices in Seoul, the exchange provides an integrated marketplace for the trading of equities, bonds, derivatives, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), exchange-traded notes (ETNs), and other financial instruments. Established on 27 January 2005 through the merger of the Korea Stock Exchange, the KOSDAQ market, and the Korea Futures Exchange, KRX was created to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and global competitiveness of South Korea's capital markets.
KRX operates several distinct markets, including the KOSPI Market for large and established corporations, the KOSDAQ Market for technology-oriented and growth companies, and the KONEX Market, which was launched in 2013 to facilitate capital raising by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups. In addition to cash equity markets, the exchange manages one of the world's most active derivatives markets, offering futures and options contracts on stock indices, individual equities, interest rates, and commodities. The exchange also serves as the central listing venue for real estate investment trusts (REITs), exchange-traded products, and structured securities in South Korea.
Beyond operating trading platforms, the Korea Exchange functions as a self-regulatory organization responsible for market surveillance, issuer disclosure oversight, and the enforcement of listing and trading rules. It also provides clearing and settlement services through its integrated market infrastructure, contributing to the stability and integrity of the South Korean financial system. As a member of several international financial organizations, including the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), KRX plays a significant role in connecting South Korea's capital markets with global investors and promoting the country's position as a leading financial hub in East Asia.
