The Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. (commonly known as Merrill Lynch) was an American investment bank, wealth management firm, and financial services company that became one of the world's largest providers of brokerage, investment banking, asset management, and financial advisory services. Founded in 1914 by Charles E. Merrill and Edmund C. Lynch, the company was headquartered in New York City. Merrill Lynch earned the nickname "The Thundering Herd" for its extensive network of financial advisers and retail brokerage operations. For much of the twentieth century, it played a leading role in the development of the United States capital markets by expanding access to investment services for individual investors alongside institutional clients.

Merrill Lynch provided a comprehensive range of financial services, including securities brokerage, wealth management, mergers and acquisitions advisory, equity and debt underwriting, institutional sales and trading, asset management, research, private banking, and structured finance. The firm served retail investors, corporations, governments, institutional investors, pension funds, hedge funds, and high-net-worth individuals across numerous countries. It was also a major participant in global equity, fixed-income, foreign exchange, and derivatives markets and was recognized for its influential investment research and extensive distribution network.

During the financial crisis of 2007–2008, Merrill Lynch experienced substantial losses arising from its exposure to mortgage-backed securities and other structured financial products. In September 2008, amid severe market instability, the company agreed to be acquired by Bank of America in a transaction valued at approximately US$50 billion. The acquisition, completed on 1 January 2009, created one of the world's largest financial institutions and integrated Merrill Lynch's investment banking and wealth management operations into Bank of America's broader financial services business. The investment banking division subsequently became part of BofA Securities, while the wealth management business continued under the Merrill brand.

Today, Merrill operates as the wealth management and investment advisory division of Bank of America, serving individual investors, businesses, institutions, and family offices through a broad range of financial planning, brokerage, and investment management services. The firm's legacy continues to influence the global financial industry through its contributions to securities research, investment banking, and retail wealth management. Alongside institutions such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and UBS, Merrill Lynch played a significant role in shaping the evolution of modern global investment banking and capital markets.
